Frequently Asked Questions about Attic Insulation

How important is it to properly insulate my house’s attic?

More than 90 percent of homes in America lack adequate attic insulation and wall insulation, which can increase monthly energy bills and reduce comfort. Adding house insulation with the right R-value can make a big difference.

What is the R-value?

R-value refers to the insulation's ability to resist heat flow and keep your home's temperature better controlled. As the R-value increases, the strength of the insulation also increases. Recommended R-values change based on where in the house you're adding insulation, if the area of your home has been previously insulated or not, and where you live. For example, an uninsulated attic in Alaska should have insulation installed with R-values 49-60, whereas an uninsulated attic in Hawaii only needs insulation with R-values 29-39 installed. California varies according to your location; usually from between R29 and R38. Your Professional Ecola Team Member will be able to address this at the inspection.

Does insulating the ceiling force more heat to leak out of the windows?

Adding insulation to one part of a house won't increase the "pressure" on heat losses through other parts, but poorly insulated areas will continue to be major sources of temperature fluctuation in a home.

Will stuffing thicker insulation into a smaller space increase its R-value?

Fiberglass or Blown-in insulation works like trapped air pockets. Compressing the insulation actually decreases the amount of air trapped and reduces its R-value and effectiveness.

Will attic insulation promote mold growth?

No. Insulation doesn’t hold water very well unless it is soaked and it does not provide food for biological growth. Fiberglass becomes dirty when unclean air and dust flows through it, not because of mold. Blown in insulation contains a quantity of borates which help in reducing insect population and fire suppression.

Will I have to move out during the process?

No. The insulation process only asks that you move personal items away from the attic access. Technicians are bonded and approved to be careful and diligent in your home.
