Termite infestation is a common phenomenon occurring in every 1 out of 6 homes in the United States. Termite colonies rapidly multiply in tropical climates where the air is moist because this is their survival technique. Termite infestation can cause drastic damage to a person’s property and if not seen to, it can result in a major expense of damage and repairs. There are various forms of termite treatments available on the market and leading professionals offer various choices for termite extermination, these forms of treatments include, electricity via the use of an Electro Gun , freezing, Direct HeatTM , fumigation and microwaves. Each of these various termite treatments has their own advantages and disadvantages.

The most traditional form of drywood termite treatment is via the use of fumigation. Fumigating one’s home entails the release of toxic substances into the infected residence for a certain period and then thorough ventilation of the home. This traditional method is no longer popular amongst most residents because of their potential harm to all living creatures and to the environment. Fumigation has always been an effective treatment for destroying drywood termites but due to evolving technology, non-hazardous treatments have been found to be just as effective as chemical treatments with the additional benefit of their environmental safety. Non-toxic treatments include the use of microwaves, Electro Gun and Direct HeatTM. If your termite infestation is so severe that your entire residence requires treatment, then the use of Direct HeatTM will be the best option. The advantage of Direct HeatTM above that of an Electro Gun or microwaves is that it targets an entire surface area at once. The use of Direct HeatTM entails the sealing off the infested area(s) of one’s home with a tarps and removing all items in the home that are not heat resistant. Through the use of a propane heating unit, hot air is blown into the treatment area(s). This air can reach temperatures exceeding 120F and will therefore destroy all drywood termites within its surrounding area. Direct HeatTM targets drywood termites living in your home and the duration for treatment is approximately 4 to 8 hours.

The use of an Electro Gun is ideal for smaller drywood termite infestations or “spot treatments”. The Electro Gun works via the use of electricity and works through using low current, high voltage and high frequency, killing any termite that crosses its path. The Electro Gun is extremely effective in targeting drywood termites within a particular area. If deciding to use electricity for the extermination of drywood termites, a through analysis and inspection by a trained professional is required. Should you be concerned that drywood termites may be breeding in areas of which you are unaware then utilizing Direct HeatTM for entire coverage, instead of utilizing an Electro Gun, which is only for “spot treatments” may be the better option.
