Alternative Termite Treatments

The state of California is one of the most susceptible places for infestation of termites. According to various studies, approximately every 1 in 6 homes are infested with termites, the main reason being the climate. Termites are attracted to wood and soil that is moist. They can devour large amounts of a person’s home in a short period. There are many alternative termite treatments are available on the market. Ultimately, for any family residing in an area where their home is susceptible to moisture collection, the prevention of termites is of utmost importance.

A traditional termite treatment that is still used today is fumigation. This form of treatment is toxic, hazardous and fatal to any living creature that comes in direct contact with it. Fumigation will most certainly relieve you of your drywood termite infestation but it is a risky procedure that only certified professionals are allowed to perform. Your home will be sealed airtight and a poisonous substance is released and left for approximately three days. Although fumigation destroys drywood termites living in your home, you will need to remove any living creature out of your home and bag food items during the period of fumigation. Once the hazardous substances have worked their way through your home, the airtight seals are removed and the house is thoroughly ventilated, moving back will only be possible once all the fumes and toxic substances have left your home. One popular chemical that was used for fumigation is called Methyl Bromide. This substance has since been banned in the State of California because of its hazardous elements and destruction that it causes to the ozone layer. Fumigation is therefore not environmentally friendly and if possible, one should consider a non-hazardous, non-toxic alternative termite treatment.

When considering alternative termite treatments, one should take into account what the inspector found during his inspection, cost of treatments recommended and the possible results one can expect. Ultimately, to take care of our environment, alternative treatments that do not contain chemicals and that are not damaging to our ozone layer are the better option. When consulting with your pest control professional, you should find out which products are best to use and are better for the environment and which alternative termite treatments will have long term lasting effects. Many professionals say that preventing excessive build up of moisture in one’s home, such as leaky pipes, is one certain way to prevent termites from starting to breed. There are also many treatments are available for individuals who are living in a new home with this problem. Professionals are available for a termite inspection. During the inspection, they will be able to analyze your particular problem and provide you with a detailed description , in writing, of where the termites are breeding, how severe the infestation is and what alternative termite treatments would work best for your situation.
